Abstract

H. G. Wells wrote more than 90 years ago in 1919:

‘Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe’. It seems to me in 2011 these words are very true. As a result, I have four priorities for education in Australia today. They are:
  1. 1.

    The centrality of the teacher

     
  2. 2.

    The importance of preschool education

     
  3. 3.

    The curriculum priorities

     
  4. 4.

    The need to establish an agreed and equitable system of financing education across all systems

     

I shall now address each of these priorities in turn.
