Abstract

Many developing countries in West Africa do not offer preschool in their government elementary schools. A small NGO (a non-governmental or nonprofit organization), World Children’s Relief, offered preschool teacher training in rural areas of Senegal, Burkina Faso, and Sierra Leone. School officials in those countries approved of the project and the work began in 2004. By 2010, hundreds of teachers had participated in the training at least once, and many more than once. The chapter describes the nature of the existing schools in Senegal and how preschools evolved. The training is also described, as well as case studies of four educators in Senegal who have engaged in the program and are implementing the training in their classrooms.
