Abstract

In his scheme for The Principles of History Collingwood mentions as the first topic for the second book (it was never written, however) the relation between history and natural science. The themes would be, first, that history and natural science may not be reduced to each other, and second, that there is a certain relation between them (PH, 245–6). For a good understanding of these topics it is appropriate, however, first to consider Collingwood’s views on the characteristics of a natural process and an historical process. For his opinion on the relation between natural science and history is to a great extent based on these views.
