Social Justice at the Border and in the Bordered United States: Implications for Policy and Practice
Abstract
The book editors summarize the chapters and suggest changes in immigration policy. They call for an investment zone to resuscitate the US-Mexico border region’s economy. They also call for the coordinated use of community-based organizations to challenge the status quo of economic marginalization in the border region by empowering citizens through grassroots advocacy and social action. The authors also acknowledge the power of the law and of litigation in changing the lives of people who have been treated unjustly by public and private institutions. While raising consciousness, demonstrating, advocating, testifying at public forums, voting, and community organizing all have a role in social change, they can be supplemented by what can be done in court.
