Abstract
This paper contains a sketch of the history of kinematics from Antiquity until the twentieth century. The word kinematicswas proposed by Ampère in the first half of the nineteenth century. First the circumstances surrounding that proposal are discussed. Then a sketch is given of the areas where the word was used after Ampère. Finally a survey is given of the different areas where kinematical results existed before Ampère.
