Abstract

The theme on teaching and learning at the Future of Higher Education Bologna Researchers Conference in Bucharest focuses on the central question whether the Bologna Process has proposed and created the right architecture “to in-depth restructuring and modernisation” of the European higher education institutions. The authors bring their different perceptions (students, academics and researchers) and experiences of the implementation of the Bologna Process. The articles presented in the section on teaching and learning attempt to explore through a set of questions if the last decade with its avalanche of European, national and institutional level reforms has changed the teaching and learning in European HEIs. The pivotal question is if the Bologna Process has proposed and created the right framework to effectively develop a competitive and flexible European Higher Education Area. Furthermore can the EHEA address the challenges of fostering graduates from all parts of society that are prepared to engage in lifelong learning? Is the EHEA transforming Europe into a knowledge society, built on social and geographical mobility and providing teaching and learning that will enhance the competitiveness of Europe when the world is increasingly turning its attention elsewhere?
