Capacity Building in Conflict Management at the Community Level: The Case of Burundi

Abstract

This chapter focuses on the work of a non-governmental organization called the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD). ACCORD is a South African-based organization, but works throughout Africa to bring creative solutions to the challenges posed by conflict. The chapter begins with a brief history of Burundi and this is followed by a summary of ACCORD’s work in Burundi, a description of the ACCORD Legal Aid Clinic Project and then the lessons learned. Whereas ACCORD’s work in Burundi involves various state and grassroots level interventions, the main focus of this chapter is the ACCORD Legal Aid Clinic Project.
