Abstract

In late October, 1946, the telephone rang while H.J. Muller was in the bathroom shaving. His wife answered and told him it was a reporter from New York who insisted on speaking with him. His face was covered in lather. “Damn it,” he muttered, “what’s the matter?” He grabbed the phone and barked angrily: “Muller!” He listened and replied quietly: “Are you sure? How do you know? Is it really true? Is there any confirmation of that? How can I believe that without any official notice?”
