Generalization of the scattering theorem

In most problems of practical interest the plane-stratified anisotropic medium will be bounded by free space (or possibly by isotropic dielectric media), and one is then interested to express the elements of the scattering matrix in terms of incoming and outgoing plane waves having specific prescribed polarizations (linear or circular, for instance) in these bounding media. The difficulty is that the scattering theorem (2.112) has been defined only in terms of eigenmodes of the anisotropic medium which exhibit a biorthogonality relationship (2.49) with respect to the (well-defined) adjoint eigenmodes.
