Abstract

After the first discovery of a diatom virus in 2004, at least six different diatom viruses have been isolated. Five of them are grouped into either a new tentative virus family “Bacillariornaviridae” harboring a single-stranded RNA (ssRNA) genome or the family “Bacillariodnaviridae” harboring a single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) genome; another virus is yet to be characterized. The viruses are all lytic to their respective host diatoms, and their infection is strain specific rather than species specific. The diatom viruses have been detected (and/or isolated) from the water column and also from bottom sediments. Further investigation concerning diatom viruses will show new aspects of diatomology, especially, the ecology of diatoms in natural water environments.
