Analysis of Possible Risks Associated with the Application of Water Resources in Kyrgyzstan

Abstract

The paper discusses a hydro-ecological assessment of the issues resulting from recent water resources usage in Kyrgyzstan. An assessment of the public health effects of future development and environmental contamination in the context of water sources, agricultural products, and food are presented. The methodology of environmental risk assessment is a new branch of science in Kyrgyzstan and there is no historical precedent for environmental risk assessment. An attempt is made to assess possible risks in water usage resulting from both ongoing contamination and catastrophic events. The paper discusses four groups of risks related to water resources (i.e., institutional factors; environmental and economical factors; social factors, and risks resulting from natural disasters and man-induced accidents).
