Birds of the Iztaccíhuatl-Popocatépetl National Park and their significance for ecotourism

  • Chapter
Ecology and Man in Mexico’s Central Volcanoes Area

Abstract

The interest in observing birds in their natural habitat and not confined in a cage, responds to two basic reasons; firstly, to find and appreciate a particular bird species and secondly to enjoy a walk outdoors in contact with nature. However, birth watching is more common to foreigners who visit México spending huge amounts of money and time to travel there and watch birds as their main tourist activity. The mountain range of the Valley of México is a region with an outstanding biodiversity, a situation that is particularly confirmed by the presence of birds and their environments. A severe limitation for the understanding of the diversity of birds in Mexico is the lack of inventories of local or regional birds. With this paper, it is our intention to point out the most meaningful bird species for ecotourism as well as the places that can potentially offer to the visitor of the Iztaccíhuatl and Popocatépetl volcanoes area greatest satisfactions within a bird watching activity. Ten routes along the northwestern part of the Iztaccíhuatl are recommended for bird watching. The area is selected because of it’s proximity to lodging areas such as Amecameca and Tlalmanalco and also because access to the Popocatépetl is still risky due to the volcano’s low but constant activity.
