Abstract
The theory of two-wave solitary waves supported by parametric wave mixing in an optical medium with second-order nonlinear responce is presented. This includes a brief discussion of the existence and stability of bright solitons due to second-harmonic generation, dark solitons, the effect of competing nonlinearities, self-focusing in quasi-phase-matched materials, etc. One of the reasons for the current high level of interest is the web of connections with other types of non-Kerr solitary waves and relatively low switching power expected from the cascaded nonlinearities. A summary of important unsolved problems and hot topics in this field is also included.
