Abstract
This chapter provides an introduction to the basic concepts of cw radiation and solitary wave propagation in quadratically nonlinear media. After some introductory comments on the modern motivation for this area of study, a very detailed discussion of polarisation in quadratic media is presented. Through this, an opportunity is taken to present full derivations, with due consideration being given to typical crystal symmetries involved and the accepted notation in the field. Nonlinear plane wave eigenstates are considered both for scalar and vector waves, with thorough discussions being given of how to generate equations that couple the behaviour of fundamental and the harmonic cw radiation. Balanced states are clearly explained and the vector case embraces a discussion of type I, type II and mixed type I-type II phase-matching. The chapter ends with a detailed discussion of scalar solitary waves, in which the cw equations are extended to include diffraction and a Lagrangian approach to stability of single-peak stationary solutions.
