Three potyviruses (Potato viruses A, Y and V) are economically- important in potato crops. All three viruses are transmitted from infected to healthy plants in the non-persistent manner by aphids, induce in infected plants cylindrical cytoplasmic inclusions (“pinwheels”) composed of a protein of c. 74 kDa, have slightly flexuous filamentous particles mostly measuring c.750 × 11 nm each with a coat protein of c. 34 kDa encapsidating a single molecule of ss positive-sense RNA of c. 10 kb.
