Abstract

Rice, Oryza sativa (Graminae), was domesticated earlier than 5000 B.C. in northeast of India. Its cultivation then spread throughout Southeast Asia and southern China. In Africa, Oryza glaberrima was domesticated along the Niger River probably around 1500 B.C. It is principally grown in West Africa.
