Abstract
Adipose tissue can act as an effector organ that influences both cancer risk and tumor behavior. This review will focus on the emerging role of adipocytes in cancer progression. To date, the exact mechanisms by which adipocytes promote an aggressive cancer phenotype are poorly understood. Critical aspects of cancer cell-adipocyte interaction/cross-talk will be discussed. Tumor progression may depend on the specific “activation” by invading cancer cell stimuli of cancer-associated adipocytes (CAAs). In addition to local function, CAAs have also systemic effects that impact on tumorigenesis. Interestingly, there are similarities between CAA- and obesity -related alterations of cytokines, adipokines and hormones, providing some molecular insights into the reported pejorative link between obesity and cancer.
