Character and Scale of Environmental Disturbances Resulting from Mining in the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly

Chapter

Abstract

GIS is employed to map and analyze the extent of environmental pollution in this huge iron mining complex in western Russia. Among the problems facing this region are air, water, and soil pollution as well as industrial and chemical pollution. These problems contribute to environmental degradation and health problems in the Starooskol’skiy and Gubkinskiy regions. Five categories about ecological violations are identified, discussed, and mapped in these regions: satisfactory, stress-like, critical, crisis-like, and catastrophic. It is hoped that such medical/demographic/environmental research will contribute to the development of improved technologies to improve the human/environmental condition.
