Abstract
The second law of thermodynamics can be used to detect and determine losses in a flow field. After a general discussion of losses and their corresponding nondimensional loss coefficients it is discussed how this method can be applied to determine effects of wall roughness. Examples are given for laminar and turbulent flows through pipes and channels with wall roughnesses. For laminar as well as well as for turbulent cases comparisons with experimental data serve as validation of the method proposed.
