Abstract
As an upper-middle income country, Turkey has made considerable progress in economic development and social indicators during the last two decades. However, disparities due to region and gender are large, and the country faces significant inequalities in income distribution. The neoliberal policies implemented during the 1980s, the impact of financial crises and the process of globalization have led to the emergence of new forms of social stratification, urban residential patterns and cultural dynamics. As a result of these economic, social and demographic transformations, the incidence of poverty has increased, and this has impacted strongly on children as the most vulnerable group in society. This chapter provides a general overview of the poverty profile in the country before focusing on childhood poverty. The children’s situation is considered in terms of maternal and child health, education and child labour. Turkish social policy strategies to improve children ’s well-being are assessed, and the social protection mechanisms are evaluated.
