Long-Period Earthquake Ground Motion: Recent Advances and Observations from the April 6 2009, M w6.3 L’Aquila Earthquake, Italy

Abstract

The spread of performance-based seismic design, together with the fast increase of digitally recorded strong motion accelerations worldwide, has promoted an ever increasing interest in the determination of reliable displacement spectra for design. The reliability of such spectra is usually restricted by the constraints imposed by high-pass data filtering. Recent studies suggest that response spectra from high-quality digital records are reliable up to periods longer than usually thought, so that ground motion prediction models and seismic hazard analyses can be reliably extended up to at least 10 s. This study encompasses such recent findings, that have been the starting point for the production of the Italian hazard maps at long periods. A summary of observations of long period earthquake ground motion, based on a the strong motion data recorded at the epicentral region of the April 6 2009, M w 6.3 L’Aquila earthquake, Italy, is also provided.
