Threats to the Future of US Science and Technology

  • Neal Lane

The title I have chosen for this chapter, “Threats to the Future of US Science and Technology,” is a way of letting the reader know that I think all is not right with US science and technology these days.

I will start with a brief “personal journey”, to provide some context and, perhaps, help explain why I feel so strongly about some of the issues I will touch on. Then, I will add a few comments about how the White House works, or rather how I worked in the White House when I was privileged to serve there. I’ll close by describing four “threats” to science and technology in this country and speculate on what the President’s Science Advisor and the rest of us can do.
