Women on Corporate Boards of Directors

Part of the book series: Issues in Business Ethics ((IBET,volume 14))

Abstract

Increasing research attention has been paid to corporate boards of directors (Demb & Neubauer, 1992). Recent writing has focussed on evaluating corporate director performance (Conger, Finegold & Lawler, 1998), corporate director influences on CEO pay (Cochran, Wood & Jones, 1985) and relationships between director characteristics and company performance (Daily, 1995, Zahra & Pearce, 1989). Relatively little consideration has been given to the makeup of coprorate boards of directors particularly the low participation of qualified women serving on them (Gillies, 1992; Lorsch & MacIver, 1989).

This research was supported in part by the School of Business, York University and Catalyst. Elizabeth Kurucz, Celia Moore and Rob Carson assisted with data collection and analysis.
