Decision Support System: Concept and Potential for Integrated Water Resources Management

  • Chapter
Book cover Natural and Anthropogenic Disasters

Abstract

Water is the lifeblood of the biosphere. It makes life itself possible, and nourishes our ecosystems, grows our food and powers our industry. Hardly any economic activity can be sustained without water (Haddadin, 2001). Thus, water plays a vital role in our life. Different dimensions of water functions in society and nature are (Iyer, 2004; Falkenmark and Rockstrom, 2004): water as life-support and hence, as a basic need and as a human and animal right; water as an economic commodity in some uses; water as an integral part of the ecosystem (sustaining it and being sustained by it); water as a sacred resource; and water as an ineluctable component of cultures and civilizations.
