Problematisch alcoholgebruik

Samenvatting

Alcoholgebruik onder volwassenen in Nederland is wijdverspreid. Dat is zichtbaar in de cijfers: acht op de tien Nederlanders boven de 18 jaar drinkt wel eens alcohol. Onder vrouwen is het alcoholgebruik en problematisch alcoholmisbruik minder prevalent dan bij mannen; in specifieke subgroepen is het echter meer prevalent. Vrouwen gebruiken eerder alcohol vanuit relatieproblemen, angst, depressie of traumagerelateerde klachten, mannen eerder vanuit een positieve beleving. De meerderheid van volwassenen die voor een alcoholprobleem hulp zoekt is man. Alcohol leidt bij vrouwen tot meer intoxicaties en lichamelijke gevolgen doordat ze een minder actief alcoholdehydrogenase hebben en een lagere vocht/vetverhouding dan mannen. De behandeling van problematisch gebruik van alcohol richt zich op de onderliggende mechanismen. Farmacologisch is de ondersteuning van het onthoudingsbeeld bij vrouwen niet anders dan bij mannen. De keuze voor een anti-cravingmiddel kan mede door het sekseverschil worden bepaald, omdat vrouwen meer last hebben van de bijwerkingen van naltrexon.
