Transplantatiegeneeskunde bestrijkt een gebied dat bij uitstek multidisciplinair wordt beoefend. De interne geneeskunde en heelkunde zijn de traditionele klinische pijlers waarop transplantatiegeneeskunde rust. Een verdere differentiatie binnen deze disciplines, maar ook ontwikkelingen binnen de pathologie, immunobiologie en immunogenetica, hebben het gebied zijn huidige inhoud gegeven.
