Samenvatting
Secundaire cariës is een van de meest voorkomende redenen dat restauraties falen en vervangen worden. Restauraties worden nogal eens vervangen wanneer er verkleurde randen (microlekkage) of randspleten aanwezig zijn, omdat men het risico van secundaire cariës dan hoger inschat. Speelt microlekkage eigenlijk een rol in het ontstaan van secundaire cariës en hoe groot of klein moet de randspleet tussen een restauratie zijn om het ontstaan van secundaire cariës mogelijk te maken? Recent onderzoek heeft aangetoond dat een randspleet een risicofactor kan zijn, maar dat het niet een opzichzelfstaande factor is die secundaire cariës veroorzaakt. Andere factoren die een rol zouden kunnen spelen zijn de patiëntfactor (cariësrisico), het restauratiemateriaal en de belasting van een restauratie.
