Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is de benaming van ziektebeelden die een verhoging van het bloedglucosegehalte als gemeenschappelijk kenmerk hebben. Complicaties van diabetes mellitus kunnen de kwaliteit van leven van de patiënt nadelig beïnvloeden. In dit hoofdstuk wordt de lezer geïnformeerd over het ziektebeeld diabetes mellitus en de behandelmogelijkheden, in het bijzonder de voedingstherapie. Om het ontstaan van diabetescomplicaties te voorkomen, uit te stellen of de progressie af te remmen is een adequate behandeling van de diabetes van belang. De behandeling omvat leefstijladviezen waaronder voedingsadviezen en medicatie. In dit hoofdstuk wordt duidelijk waaraan een optimale voeding voor diabetespatiënten volgens de huidige inzichten moet voldoen. Naar middelen en mogelijkheden om de behandeling verder te optimaliseren, diabetes te genezen of voorkomen, is veel onderzoek gaande.
