Inleiding
Het werkwoord to cope staat in de Webster’s Dictionary voor: het hoofd bieden aan, strijd leveren met vooral moeilijke situaties. Dat het omgaan met stress in de Engelse taal dan ook coping wordt genoemd, ligt voor de hand. Minder voor de hand liggend is een Nederlandse vertaling. Het is moeilijk om een woord te vinden dat het begrip coping goed weergeeft. Om die reden wordt de term coping meestal overgenomen, zoals we wel meer Engelse termen in de oorspronkelijke taal handhaven.
