Inleiding

Het aantal echtscheidingen is in de loop der tijd sterk toegenomen. Bedroeg het aantal in 1955 nog slechts 5.634, in 1980 is dat aantal opgelopen tot 23.735, terwijl het jaar 1985 in totaal 33.615 echtscheidingen telde. Daarna is het aantal echtscheidingen in Nederland blijven schommelen rond de 33.000 (tabel 10.1).
