Inleiding

De mens is het enige zoogdier dat permanent op twee benen loopt. Andere zoogdieren zoals beren en apen lopen weliswaar ook regelmatig op twee poten, maar plaatsen hierbij vaak ook hun bovenste (voorste) ledematen op de grond. Kangoeroes springen steeds op hun achterste poten, maar hierbij worden steeds de twee ledematen tegelijk neergezet. Voor de mens werd het biomechanisch mogelijk om steeds één been te belasten terwijl het andere been naar voren werd gezet.
