Abstract

Parodontale behandeling van ouderen moet gebaseerd zijn op het recht van ieder individu op een adequate tandheelkundige behandeling. Jarenlang verkeerden tandartsen in de veronderstelling dat de genezingsprocessen in het parodontium van ouderen verzwakt zijn. In de geriatrische tandheelkunde werd daarom vaak de voorkeur gegeven aan extractie om parodontale problemen op te lossen. Doelgerichte parodontale behandeling, zoals “rootplaning” en flapprocedures, werden meestal vermeden. De laatste jaren is duidelijk geworden dat deze veronderstelling niet juist is. Voor ouderen is een doelgerichte parodontale behandeling net zo goed weggelegd als voor jongeren.
