Abstract
De maxillofaciale prothetiek is het onderdeel van de tandheelkunde dat zich bezighoudt met het in esthetisch en functioneel opzicht, met behulp van kunstmiddelen, reconstrueren van beschadigde of verloren gegane intra- en extraorale structuren. Omdat de term “maxillofaciaal” suggereert dat de mandibula van dit vakgebied is uitgesloten, lijkt het beter van maxillomandibulofaciale of orofaciale prothetiek te spreken. Nationaal en vooral ook internationaal (“maxillofacial prosthetics”) is de term echter zo ingeburgerd dat deze in het vervolg van dit hoofdstuk zal worden gehanteerd.
