Abstract
Tandheelkundige zorgverlening aan ouderen onderscheidt zich van die aan jongeren doordat de mens bij het klimmen der jaren in steeds kwetsbaarder wordt op somatisch, psychisch en sociaal gebied en doordat de fysiologische reservecapaciteit afneemt (hoofdstuk 1.4). Door de verhoogde kwetsbaarheid en de verminderde belastbaarheid is er een verhoogd risico op het ontstaan van complicaties. Vooral de onderlinge verwevenheid van deze factoren maakt de tandheelkundige zorgverlening aan ouderen complex, maar tegelijkertijd boeiend. Nog veel meer dan bij jongeren is het bij ouderen zaak niet alleen een tandheelkundig probleem, maar de gehele patiënt in zijn totale functioneren te beschouwen, alvorens een zelfs ogenschijnlijk eenvoudig behandelingsplan op te stellen.
