6 Omgaan met cognitieve beperkingen in de revalidatie bij hersenletsel

Samenvatting

Hersenbeschadiging kan behalve sensomotorische gevolgen ook cognitieve, emotionele en gedragsveranderingen hebben. Deze veranderingen kunnen gepaard gaan met een complex van beperkingen in het dagelijks leven. In revalidatie-instellingen is gerichte aandacht voor de ‘onzichtbare’ gevolgen van mensen met niet-aangeboren hersenletsel (NAH) een niet meer weg te denken onderdeel van de behandeling. Cognitieve revalidatie is een combinatie van methoden gericht op het beter leren omgaan met de cognitieve en emotionele beperkingen. De afstemming tussen behandelaars met betrekking tot deze behandelmethode is een voortdurende uitdaging voor behandelteams. Wetenschappelijk onderzoek dat momenteel in Nederland wordt verricht naar de effectiviteit van enkele specifieke cognitieve behandelmethoden leidt tot nieuwe inzichten en aanpassing van bestaande richtlijnen.

In dit hoofdstuk worden ontwikkelingen op het gebied van de cognitieve revalidatie van patiënten met hersenletsel toegelicht. In het laatste deel worden praktische adviezen gegeven die het omgaan met cognitieve beperkingen kunnen ondersteunen. De adviezen zijn ook geschikt voor de algemeen praktiserende fysiotherapeut die patiënten met hersenletsel behandelt.
