Samenvatting
Een verstandelijke beperking (zwakzinnigheid) verwijst naar functioneringsproblemen die worden gekenmerkt door significante beperkingen in zowel het intellectuele functioneren als in het adaptieve gedrag zoals dat tot uitdrukking komt in conceptuele, sociale en praktische vaardigheden. De functioneringsproblemen ontstaan vóór de leeftijd van 18 jaar (Buntinx, 2003). Deze significante beperking in het intellectuele functioneren is een IQ dat twee standaarddeviaties onder het gemiddelde ligt, dus een IQ van 70 of lager.
