Inleiding

Verwaarlozing is de meest voorkomende vorm van kindermishandeling, maar vaak moeilijk te herkennen.1,2 Waar lichamelijke mishandeling zichtbare gevolgen achterlaat, herkenbaar voor de arts, is verwaarlozing meer verborgen en zijn de signalen subtieler. Vermoedelijk is er nog sprake van een onderrapportage en historisch en wetenschappelijk heeft verwaarlozing minder aandacht gekregen dan andere vormen van kindermishandeling.
