Abstract
Reuscelarteriitis (ook wel arteriitis temporalis genoemd) is een ontsteking van grote en middelgrote vaten en betreft met name takken van de proximale aorta. De incidentie in West-Europa is ongeveer 20 per 100.000 patiënten ouder dan 50 jaar. De American College of Rheumatology heeft in 1990 criteria opgesteld voor de classificatie van reuscelarteriitis: 1. leeftijd > 50 jaar; 2. nieuw ontstane hoofdpijn; 3. pijnlijke of verminderd pulserende aa. temporales bij fysische diagnostiek; 4. bezinking > 50 mm/uur en 5. tekenen van vasculitis bij histologisch onderzoek van een arteria temporalisbiopt. Bij meer dan drie criteria spreekt met van reuscelarteriitis.
