Psychiatrische comorbiditeit van verslaving in relatie tot criminaliteit

Abstract

Verslaving, psychiatrische stoornissen en criminaliteit komen vaak in combinatie met elkaar voor. Veertig tot zestig procent van de verslaafden heeft ooit ook een psychiatrische stoornis gehad. Andersom heeft ongeveer een derde van de mensen met een psychiatrische stoornis op enig moment in het leven een verslaving. Verslaving en comorbide psychiatrische stoornissen beïnvloeden elkaar over en weer in ernst en persistentie en leiden in gezamenlijkheid vaak tot problemen, zoals problemen met de wet. In populaties die zich kenmerken door relatief veel jongere, werkeloze, alleenstaande mannen met een laag opleidingsniveau worden relatief hoge prevalenties gevonden van psychiatrische ziektebeelden en persoonlijkheidsstoornissen. Juist deze populatie wordt veelvuldig aangetroffen in het gevangeniswezen. In het gevangeniswezen heeft ongeveer 30% van de gedetineerden problematisch alcoholgebruik, 30%-40% problematisch druggebruik, 15%-25% een verstandelijke beperking en ten minste de helft een psychiatrische stoornis (waaronder verslaving).
