Samenvatting
Zowel in de huisartspraktijk als bij de specialist is atriumfibrilleren (AF) de meest voorkomende ritmestoornis. AF is geassocieerd met een verhoogde morbiditeit en mortaliteit die voornamelijk samenhangt met de aanwezigheid van onderliggend cardiovasculair lijden en het sterk verhoogde risico op trombo-embolische complicaties. Zo bleek in de ‘Framingham study’ het risico op een CVA in de aanwezigheid van AF 3 tot 5 maal verhoogd te zijn 1). Ook speelt leeftijd hierbij een belangrijke rol in die zin, dat de kans, dat een CVA toegeschreven kan worden aan AF, relatief klein is bij patiënten jonger dan 60 jaar (1,5%) toenemend tot 23,5% bij patiënten ouder dan 80 jaar (1).
