Abstract
Vanaf ongeveer 1970 transformeren industriële samenlevingen zich in een snel tempo tot diensten- en kenniseconomieën (Castells, 1996). De opkomst van een diensten/kenniseconomie is het gevolg van drie economische trends (Korbijn, 2003). Allereerst het feit dat de markt in toenemende mate vraaggestuurd wordt: de klant wil – tegen de laagst mogelijke kosten – producten die zo veel mogelijk op maat zijn, dat wil zeggen: toegesneden op zijn specifieke wensen en behoeften. De tweede trend betreft de toenemende mondialisering (de opkomst van debal villageklanten, partners en concurrenten bevinden zich over de gehele wereld. Ook deze trend maakt het belang van relatieve kwaliteit steeds groter, en de tijd tussen productontwikkeling en het op de markt zetten van het product moet steeds korter worden om de concurrentieslag vol te kunnen houden. Ten slotte is er sprake van een toenemende dynamiek: de techniek veroudert snel en de wensen van de markt veranderen snel. Ook deze dynamiek dwingt producenten om in een steeds sneller tempo nieuwe producten in de markt te zetten.
