Zusammenfassung
Bij bacteriële meningitis zijn de hersenvliezen (meningen) en de subarachnoïdale ruimte ontstoken. Door de nauwe anatomische relatie zijn ook vaak de hersenen ontstoken (encefalitis). Bacteriële meningitis is een neurologisch spoedgeval. De incidentie van bacteriële meningitis in Nederland is ongeveer 5 : 100.000 per jaar. De meest voorkomende verwekkers zijn Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumokok) en Neisseria meningitidis (meningokok).
