Abstract
De schildklier heeft invloed op bijna alle processen in het lichaam (stofwisseling) (figuur 24.1). Hij beïnvloedt bijvoorbeeld de hartfrequentie, de stoelgang, het gewicht, de menstruatie en de stemming. De schildklier produceert de schildklierhormonen thyroxine (T4) en triiodothyronine (T3), respectievelijk ongeveer 100 en 6 microg per dag. T4 wordt volledig in de schildklier gesynthetiseerd. T3 wordt voor een klein deel in de schildklier geproduceerd, slechts voor 15-20%; het ontstaat voornamelijk in de weefsels (onder andere in de spier en de lever) via de zogenaamde perifere conversie uit T4 (figuur 24.2).
