Onvermogen tot relaxatie van de onderste slokdarmsfincter door degeneratie van de ganglioncellen in de plexus van Auerbach. Patiënten hebben voedselpassageklachten, aanvankelijk vooral voor vloeibaar voedsel, leidend tot gewichtsverlies.
