Abstract
Tim is net 7 jaar geworden. Zijn geboorte is zonder problemen verlopen, maar naarmate hij ouder werd, kreeg zijn moeder steeds meer de overtuiging dat er met hem iets niet in orde was. Zeker na de geboorte van Tims broertje Bas merkte zijn moeder dat die zich heel anders ontwikkelde. Tim struikelde veel, liet vaak dingen vallen, had moeite met zichzelf aankleden. Ook duurde het jaren voordat hij zijn strikdiploma haalde. In eerste instantie vond zijn moeder hem onhandig, maar meer en meer groeide bij haar het gevoel dat er een oorzaak moest zijn voor die onhandigheid. Het bezoek aan de huisarts was teleurstellend. De huisarts vertelde haar dat er niets aan de hand was met Tim en dat zij overbezorgd was. ‘Het komt vanzelf wel goed,’ zei de huisarts, ‘het ene kind is nu eenmaal sneller dan het andere.’ Op school kon Tim redelijk meekomen. Pas in groep 3 maakte de leerkracht Tims moeder erop attent dat zijn motoriek niet helemaal in orde was. Het was haar opgevallen dat hij houterig bewoog. Tijdens gymnastiek had hij moeite om een bal te gooien en te vangen. Ook lopen over een bank kon hij niet zonder er een paar keer af te vallen, terwijl zijn leeftijdgenootjes dat wel zonder problemen konden. Maar het meest opvallende was het schrijven. Tim kon niet op het lijntje schrijven en zijn handschrift was onleesbaar. Opnieuw bezocht moeder de huisarts. Ditmaal onderkende de huisarts wel dat de motorische ontwikkeling achterbleef en stuurde Tim door naar een revalidatiearts. Deze stelde vast dat er sprake was van een motorische coördinatiestoornis.
