Abstract

In de afgelopen twintig jaar zijn op universiteiten en specialistische onderzoeksinstituten psychologische behandelingen ontwikkeld die worden uitgevoerd aan de hand van een protocol. Een protocol behelst een stapsgewijze beschrijving van de behandeling zoals deze door behandelaars uitgevoerd dient te worden. Meestal, maar niet altijd, gaat het hierbij om diagnose- of stoornisspecifieke behandelingen, dat wil zeggen om behandelingen van patiƫnten bij wie een bepaalde diagnose werd gesteld. Het succes van protocollaire behandelingen zoals Craske en Barlows panic control treatment voor mensen met een paniekstoornis (1993) of de interpersoonlijke psychotherapie voor mensen met depressieve klachten van Klerman e.a. (1984) heeft geleid tot een debat tussen voor- en tegenstanders over de toepassing van protocollaire behandelingen in de praktijk. De gunstige behandelresultaten maken protocollaire behandelingen populair. Tegenstanders menen echter dat een protocollaire behandeling onvoldoende recht doet aan de individuele kenmerken van een patiƫnt.
