Samenvatting

Moleculaire cardiologie is een vakgebied binnen de cardiovasculaire geneeskunde dat als doel heeft moleculair-biologische technieken toepasbaar te maken voor cardiovasculair onderzoek, diagnostiek en preventie, en uiteindelijk de behandeling van cardiovasculaire ziekten. De snelle ontwikkeling van technieken en de toepassing van de moleculaire biologie zorgen ervoor dat wetenschappers en clinici grote vorderingen maken. Zo heeft de moleculaire cardiologie het concept van de ontwikkeling van het cardiovasculaire systeem, de etiologie en de pathofysiologie van ziekte drastisch veranderd. Toch is er nog steeds behoefte aan meer inzicht in het moleculaire mechanisme van cardiovasculaire ziekten om de ontwikkeling van bijvoorbeeld cel- en gentherapie voor dit veld mogelijk te maken.
