Circa 1% van de ongeveer 3500 leden van de Blattidae (kakkerlakken) familie komen in woningen voor. Kakkerlakken zijn omnivoren, die met groot succes alle pogingen van de mens om hen uit te roeien, wereldwijd hebben doorstaan (1). Veruit de meest voorkomende kakkerlak in Nederland is Blatella germanica, minder vaak komt Blatella oriëntalis voor, evenmin als Periplaneta americana.
