Voor de meeste mensen is plassen iets vanzelfsprekends. Toch komt er fysiologisch en psychologisch heel wat bij kijken. Verscheidene processen in het lichaam moeten op elkaar worden afgestemd en voor menigeen is ook een ‘veilige’ omgeving nodig. Uiteenlopende oorzaken kunnen het moeilijk maken te plassen. De moeilijkheden bij het plassen hebben voor iedere patiënt weer een eigen inhoud en betekenis. Bij sommige mensen staat het moeilijk op gang komen van de urine voorop, bij andere de moeilijkheid om de blaas leeg te plassen, of dat de straal zo zwak is, dat de urine eruit druppelt in plaats van eruit stroomt. In het uiterste geval kan moeilijk plassen leiden tot een acute urineretentie. De genoemde onderdelen van de klacht moeilijk plassen komen vaak samen voor, maar niet altijd. Dezelfde klacht kan op verschillende manieren worden gepresenteerd. De beleving van de klacht speelt daarbij een grote rol.
