Rood oog

Met een ‘rood oog’ wordt in dit hoofdstuk de klacht aangeduid die betrekking heeft op een rode verkleuring ter plaatse van het oogwit.1 2 Bij het normale oog ziet men de witte kleur van de sclera door de dunne, vrijwel transparante conjunctiva heen. Roodheid ontstaat meestal door verwijding van de bloedvaten van de conjunctiva zelf of van de sclera, of door een bloeding. In dit hoofdstuk wordt roodheid van de oogleden of van de huid rondom het oog (bijvoorbeeld ten gevolge van een orbita flegmone) niet begrepen onder de term ‘rood oog’, evenmin als een rode verkleuring in de voorste oogkamer (bijvoorbeeld door een bloeding: hyphaema).
